Surfacing (Invisible Drawings), 2024, hand-engraved, found acrylic boxes

Surfacing centers “Cinderella” as a starting point. With geographical locations ranging from China to Scotland, the tale is a compelling framework for interrogating cultural assumptions and representations as well as homogeneity; social constructs; and myth-making in the global sphere. The reuse and destabilizing of the tale is supported by the reuse of plastic. For Surfacing, I used pre-used, clear acrylic boxes to engrave on – creating unfixed spaces from hard, rigid plastic. Viewers become participants through the viewing process: The “drawing” (shadows cast from the engraving) can only be properly seen by shining light onto the pieces and then moves in tandem with the viewer’s motions.
