Scholars and officials were generally the protagonists in Chinese folktales and ghost stories, which grew from oral tradition before being recorded by scholars like Pu Songling 蒲松龄. These tales use the plot device of the scholar in various states of accomplishment to lead into morally and psychologically resonant storylines.
